Bogus Facebook, Malware, and a Dancing GirlWithout a doubt, Facebook is the most popular social networking site today among users and cyber criminals alike. Every now and then, Trend Micro discovers threats that ride on the said social networking site. For instance, just last week, Rik Ferguson, security analyst, reported a new variant of Koobface propagating via Facebook. Earlier today, Trend Micro is alerted of another Facebook attack involving a dancing girl’s video and a bogus Facebook website. Spammed messages supposedly from Facebook entice users to click on the link to view the said video. The email seems legitimate and utilizes 'appealing' subjects like Facebook Message: Girls Dancing on facebook Video (Last rated by Fannie Cano), FaceBook message: Dancing girl oriental dance … (Last rated by Abdul Kay), and FaceBook message: Hot Girl Dancing At Striptease Dance Party to name a few. Here's a screenshot of the email message: Figure 1. Sample spammed message Clicking the link, lands users to a bogus Facebook site that asks the user to install the malicious file, Adobe_Player11.exe to watch the video. Trend Micro detects this file as TSPY_PAPRAS.AX. PAPRAS variants are info-stealers that launch a carnivore sniffer to retrieve passwords from network packets. It then sends gathered information to a remote site. Facebook's fame has definitely made it a good avenue for cybercriminals to proliferate malware. Here’s some of the notable Facebook attacks in the past:
As always, users are advised to be vigilant in opening any emails even if its supposedly from a known source. Post from: TrendLabs | Malware Blog - by Trend Micro Bogus Facebook, Malware, and a Dancing Girl Patches Released by Microsoft and AdobeBoth Microsoft and Adobe recently released security bulletins for reported vulnerabilities on their respective products, with Microsoft issuing 3 advisories, and Adobe finally releasing a patch to a previously discussed vulnerability. Microsoft released the following security bulletins–one critical and two important–addressing several vulnerabilities:
Microsoft, however, has yet to release a security update for the Microsoft Office Excel vulnerability. On the other hand, a security update to resolve the CVE-2009-0658 vulnerability was released by Adobe. The said vulnerability has been identified in Adobe Reader 9 and Acrobat 9, and earlier versions. It is an array-indexing error when processing a malformed JBIG2 stream within a PDF document. It then could allow attackers to cause a vulnerable application to crash and execute arbitrary code by tricking a user into opening a specially-crafted PDF file. It could potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system. In addition to the above, Adobe is planning to prepare updates for Adobe Reader 7 and 8, and Acrobat 7 and 8 by March 18, 2009. It will also announced the release Adobe Reader 9.1 for Unix, to be done on March 25. For more information regarding this vulnerability, you may refer to the link below: Users are strongly advised to update their system with these latest patches. Post from: TrendLabs | Malware Blog - by Trend Micro Patches Released by Microsoft and Adobe TinyURL Phishing Becoming PopularThe language has changed but the modus operandi remains the same. Spammed messages, this time in Spanish, again use TinyURLs to mask the exact destination of the links they contain. Here’s a sample email message: Figure 1. Sample spammed message. The message above claims to be from Bancaja, a popular Spanish bank. It tells its recipients that their accounts are temporarily suspended because of possible malicious activities. Users are then told to reactivate their accounts within 24 hours by following the link provided in the message. The exact URL is concealed using TinyURL. We previously blogged about similar phishing operations that used this exact technique to trick users into thinking links are legitimate: As TinyURLs become more and more popular, phishers are also exploiting the URL shortening service this said tool provides. They do this make phishing URLs less suspicious and less obvious than using the exact URL, which could be long and totally unrelated to the site a spammed message purports to be from. The Trend Micro Smart Protection Network already blocks these spammed messages. Ignoring spammed messages keeps systems safe from spam-borne threats. There are also online tools that users could use to verify TinyURLs, like the URL expander offered by http://longurl.org/tools. Substituting preview.tinyurl.com for tinyurl.com also allows users to get a preview of the final link.
